I bought a Genie H4000A-2 in 2007, which is a screw drive model, hoping it would be more reliable than the chain types. Well, this one failed. It’s a 3 piece screw, which is the source of the problem. The screw drive sections are held together with these collars, and the collars are kept in place with crappy little retaining clips. And to add insult to injury, they want to sell you the collar and clip (19863R Screw Drive Clip and Collar) for about $8 (that includes $5 shipping, but the Overhead Door company here doesn’t carry the collar/clip kit, but they sure as hell wanted to sell me a whole new opener!). Anyway, in this video I show how not to buy the $0.02 part for $8.00. Instead, I wrap some copper wire around the shaft and solder it to itself. Then I install a new carriage ($13.50, delivered off Amazon – Genie 20414R Carriage for Screw Drive Operators). Avoid multi-part screw drives!

Here’s a tip… Throw that POS in the garbage and buy a Liftmaster. Then boycot this shitty brand Genie because they manufacture garbage.
15 years in the business of installing these units here
@ozziekuma, Yes, the old carriage was indeed beyond repair. A symptom, before complete failure, was the screw turned, but the carriage didn’t move. If I pulled up on the door, it might ‘catch’ and then it would start moving. But there were so many teeth missing from the carriage that when it got to the place were there was a gap in the screw shaft, it would stop.
@sengsationa1 Was the old carriage chewed up like you suspected? I have the same issue with the collar and clip. just recieved the collar and clip in the mail and gonna put it together this weekend. just wondering if I need to replace the carriage too.

you should get a lift master myQ it has an assesory that you can put in you room in case you forget to close your garage
Generally these machines come with extra. clips in the parts pack and it’s a good idea to hang on to them. As Genie Pro dealer, I don’t sell knock down models, but install customer units.
great vid thanks for taking the time (saved me some:).
Thank You Very Much!! The carriage on my genie failed a week ago. Your instructions were spot on and my garage door works perfectly now with its new carriage. You’re a lifesaver!
@sms373, The chamerlain was installed by the builder in 1993. Can’t remember the number of lights. I actually still have it stowed-away….thought I might use it for something. The motor and gears worked, but the shuttle kept wearing-out. It would just scrape along the t-bar, and even though I kept it greased, it kept wearing out. Like I said before, probably wouldn’t have been a problem without the high lift.
So what was wrong with you chamberlain? And how old was it did it have 2 lights or one light?
thanks. it helps.
@chicagolandhobby ok i’m trying to be
@ConnorCatGarageDoors Dude, for the millionth time, Please try to be more specific.
@chicagolandhobby yes it is
@chicagolandhobby i agree with you
@Weather1956, I thought it was bad the clip came off after 3 years! Dang, I’d be really “concerned” if the clip came off so soon after installation.
Thanks for the video. Just put a new Genie up and a clip came off. Will have to think about a little extra help like soldering in place to help it.
@chicagolandhobby This one actually replaced a Chamberlain that was original to the house. The problem with that one (chain drive) was the shuttle kept wearing out (metal to metal). Probably due to the odd forces from the high lift. This one deflects the bar pretty far each opening, but things seem to be holding up ok.
@madisonelectronic Thanks for the offer of the clips. So far, so good…hopefully I won’t need them!
I like your work. Genie are a**holes when it comes to parts. I have handfulls of collars and clips (the part you improvised) You will find that if you break the “handclasp” the little machined ends at the joint Genie will tell you a single screw piece will not fit and you must buy the whole screw. BS, I have single sections and they fit just fine. Your repair should hold cause the collar requires very little to hold it in place. If it does fail write and I will send you some clips free.
Well there’s your problem right there. You bought a Genie. Not saying that they’re the worst, but Chamberlain/LiftMaster is a lot better.
And technically high lift doors like yours aren’t supposed to have normal operators like that, but it seems to be working okay so it should be fine.
